Chicks dig scars…

May 22, 2009

On Tuesday, Mylo gave himself his first black eye. He was showing Grandpa Don how to walk around the table and play with the chairs, pulled too hard on one and it came crashing down onto his face. The result was a little cut on the outside of his right eye and a lot of blood! The cut isn’t very deep, and it clotted quickly. Mylo also recovered—not as fast as usual, but he did recover! It’s a good thing that chicks dig scars!

We took a trip to Los Angeles for Chris’s friend Jared’s wedding. We figured why not make a vacation out of it?!

We left town on Thursday, spent the night in a hotel in Spokane, and then flew out on Friday. Mylo handled the flights beautifully, and while he was squirmy, he was never fussy or grumpy. We had three legs on Friday, and by beginning of the last leg we were all very ready to be off the plane. We landed in Ontario, picked up the rental, and took the “scenic” route to the hotel. We were supposed to make the rehearsal, but we made it to the dinner!

On Saturday, we spent our time at the hotel, and Mylo got his first experience in a real pool. He loved floating on his tummy like a motorboat, but would get a little freaked out when we’d flip him over. At about 2pm, we got cleaned up and ready to go to the wedding. The wedding was located in Mission Viejo in a gated community at the golf course. Jared and Nina couldn’t have created a more beautiful wedding, they really did pull out all the stops, with a five course meal and more flowers than I’ve ever seen in one spot!

Sunday we drove into the Hollywood Hills area to pick up our friend Travis, and then out to the Getty Center. My Mother’s Day present was twofold: the illuminated manuscript and Impressionism rooms at the Getty. We saw Irises by VanGogh, The Cathedral at Sunrise and one of the Waterlilies series by Monet, two by Matisse, a Manet, and so many more! I was so overwhelmed by the presence of these originals that I started to tear up! It’s kind of embarrassing, but the only way I can describe the awe. Mylo was of course, a total trooper, and Chris was amazing!

After we dropped Travis off at home on Sunday, we drove out to Fontana, a.k.a. “Fontucky,” to stay with Lonnie and Becky Keeney and their daughter Andrea. When bedtime came, I wandered upstairs to get Mylo’s stuff ready for the bath, and I never thought that he’d follow. He did. I think he got about four stairs into it when someone realized what he was doing! We took video Monday morning.

Monday we went to Pasadena to the Huntington Library. They have the most complete Canterbury Tales still in existence (Ellesmere manuscript), and one of the remaining 41 Gutenburg Bibles. I died a little when I saw those. I also saw two of the constitutional amendments in their original forms, Lincoln’s address to abolish slavery in his own handwriting, original drawings by Catesby, and so much more. Here’s a link for a sampling! http://www.huntington.org/huntingtonlibrary_exhibitions.aspx?id=854

Outside the halls, there are also gardens at the Huntington. We explored those also, including the Japanese garden where parts of Memoirs of a Geisha was filmed. Recognize the bridge behind Chris and Mylo? The whole place was breathtaking!

That evening, we put Mylo outside in the grass. Apparently, the grass in California is so different from the grass in Idaho, that Mylo was put off by even the idea of touching it with his tender little knees! The picture below is his new “grass crawl.”
We all enjoyed the trip, Mylo was an angel on the way home, and we arrived on Tuesday afternoon completely exhausted, but very happy!

Playing at the park

Lanette and Blair came down to spend the night and that next morning we went to the park for a little bit. Mylo was very interested in “driving,” and not so interested in anything else! We eventually moved on to the swings, but they didn’t hold much of a candle to the steering wheel.
